Welcoming a photographer into your home or meeting outdoors for a shoot can feel like a big step — especially when you have a new baby or little ones to think about. Whether you're planning a newborn session, celebrating the beauty of maternity, capturing the raw emotion of birth, gathering generations together with grandparents, or embracing the freedom of a outdoor beach shoot, here’s a simple guide to help you feel prepared, relaxed, and excited for your upcoming session.

Follow the Light

For indoor sessions, light is everything. I’ll be on the lookout for soft natural light streaming through windows or open doors. Before the session, take a quick look around and see where the best light hits your home during the time of day we’ll be shooting. Clear those areas if you can — just enough for us to step in and begin creating. Think of spaces near windows, doorways, or anywhere the light naturally pools. We won’t need much, just a pocket of good light. Any neutral walls or comfy couches can work too. Avoid overly patterned designs as we really want the true focus to be your faces and your connection with each other.

What About Posing?

If you're wondering how to pose, here’s the good news: you don’t have to. I focus on natural, emotive imagery that's child-led and connection-based. Think play, cuddles, kisses, and movement. This applies across all sessions — from candid moments in toddler photography, to skin-to-skin snuggles during a newborn shoot, or the relaxed, joy-filled vibe of a maternity or beach session. We can come up with an activity together like baking cookies, walking on the beach throwing stones. It's all about allowing the fun and smiles to shine through naturally. One thing to keep in mind: Always Huddle In. The closer you are to the people you love, the more magic we can capture. Let your kids lead, hold your partner close, and don’t be afraid to just be yourselves. It’s in those little in-between moments that the real beauty shows up.

What to Wear

The key is to keep it simple: neutral tones, natural textures, and no big logos or bold patterns. Let the focus stay on your faces and your connection. If you’d like to mix in some patterns, just make sure only one person wears one, to keep things visually calm and cohesive.

Wear something you feel good in and can move around easily in. For beach or outdoor sessions, think flowy fabrics, bare feet, and layers you can throw on or off. For newborn, maternity, or even tender grandparent sessions, skin-to-skin moments are incredibly powerful, so wear items that allow for that closeness — soft robes, open shirts, and comfortable basics work beautifully.

"Christine has a really special skill of making you feel comfortable the minute you walk into the room. She embraces all the chaos of our home and made it feel warm, happy, supportive, and a little bit magical for the entirety of the shoot!"
