Spring is a comin'

Spring in Newcastle upon Tyne has a magic all its own, and nowhere shows it off quite like the walk from Gosforth over the Armstrong Bridge into Jesmond Dene.

Looking back to last year this time, I met this gorgeous family for a wildflower session in one of Newcastle's most beloved green spaces. We started our walk in South Gosforth, crossed over the historic Armstrong Bridge (with its stunning views of the woodland below), and wandered down into Jesmond Dene just as the hawthorn blossoms were at their peak.

Why the South Gosforth to Jesmond Dene Route Is Perfect for Family Photography

If you're looking for a natural, accessible location for family photos in Newcastle upon Tyne, the South Gosforth to Jesmond Dene route via Armstrong Bridge is hard to beat. As a family photographer serving South Gosforth, Jesmond, and across the North East, I return to this location again and again. Here's why it worked beautifully for this session:

Historic Armstrong Bridge – This Grade II listed Victorian bridge is a Newcastle landmark. Built in 1878 by Lord Armstrong and gifted to the people of Newcastle, it provides spectacular views down into Jesmond Dene. The bridge connects South Gosforth (NE3) to Jesmond (NE2) and is now pedestrian-only, making it safe and peaceful for family photography sessions.

Easy walking from South Gosforth into Jesmond Dene – Perfect for little legs (and parents carrying them when those legs get tired!). The route from South Gosforth Metro (about 15 minutes walk) takes you across Armstrong Bridge and down into one of Newcastle's most beautiful woodland valleys.

Spring wildflowers in Jesmond Dene – Late April through May brings hawthorn blossoms along the Ouseburn valley, bluebells peeking through the ancient woodlands, and dandelions everywhere. This little one was obsessed with picking dandelion clocks, and we let that curiosity lead the whole session.

Natural light in Newcastle's wooded valley – The dappled light filtering through Jesmond Dene's canopy is a photographer's dream. From the open views on Armstrong Bridge to the sheltered woodland paths of the dene, you get variety without driving to multiple Newcastle locations.

Wildlife corridor between South Gosforth and Jesmond Vale – Jesmond Dene is a narrow wooded valley following the River Ouseburn, creating an important wildlife corridor right into the centre of Newcastle. You might spot kingfishers, red squirrels, and woodland birds during your session.
